Kat McKinnon
Provisional Psychologist
I am a provisional psychologist, and am a placement student at the Kidd Clinic while I finish my degree in clinical psychology. I am myself neurodivergent and I know that we often require more support, and that the shape of that support may be quite different from non-neurodivergent people. I hope that my own experiences inform my understanding of my clinical work. From the beginning of my studies in psychology, I’ve known that I want to work with other neurodivergent people, and I particularly enjoy working with neurodivergent adults.
Other areas of special interest for me include anxiety, depression, trauma and disability. In my work with clients, I mainly draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), as tailored to neurodivergent brains as well as to individual needs. I firmly believe in a neuro-affirming approach, in which strengths are considered alongside difficulties. I really enjoy when clients feel comfortable communicating their needs within therapy, so if you need to sit on the floor, play with Lego, or bring in a pet or stuffed animal, I’m all for it.
When I’m not working or studying, I like to cook and eat sweet things and read. I enjoy creating things, this extends to lego, drawing and painting, and I sometimes make the pixel art for the games my partner codes. I’m a homebody, and like to be lazy around my house with my partner and our orange cat, Theo.
